The Dream Begins

My name is Pete Rogers and my wife Susan have a dream and we want to share it with you.

The dream began several years ago and is still festering in us. Susan and I were sitting around one evening and asking ourselves what we wanted for our five children. We live in Upstate South Carolina in the middle of suburban sprawl and we are sick of it! We have lived here for almost nine years and the area has exploded around us. We need to do something else.

While discussing our options, we discussed selling everything and buying an RV and traveling around the United States. After a few RV shows we realized this is not what we wanted. We knew we wanted to travel. We wanted to give our children more, in this world where we are inundated by a world of entitlement, a world of selfishness, and self absorbed we wanted to show our children more. We want for them to excell as all parents do. But we want more for them. We want their dreams to be their horizons. We do not want to rear children who become adults and punch a clock and go home and refuse to dream because of the fear it causes. Instead we wanted to show them that the journey is the destination. We wanted to show them that their dreams are only one decision away. One moment, one action that can and does change everything.

As we discussed this the possibility of how to accomplish this was huge. How can we demonstrate to our children that dreams are possible unless we chased our dreams. How is it possible to talk one thing and live another?

As we discussed this one thing jumped out to each of us. There were some similarities, but the one that was constant on both of our list's was Sailing through the caribbean sea. We sat and looked at each other and knew that this was it. We would sail through the caribbean sea.

There are some issues with this; I have never sailed. Susan has, but only as a passanger, never as a co-pilot. This would prove to be a huge undertaking. So we began. In 2007 we set a goal to liquidate and buy a sailing catamaran and set sail.

A lot of research has gone into this. Expense is the greatest. Buying a sailing catamarran is no small feat. But as we looked at it. It costs as much as a house. Duh, this would be our house! and the sea our yard. No mowing, no weeding, just water! Who needs a neighborhood pool when you have the atlantic ocean?

So we begin. This blog is going to be my pre-sailing log book of the preperations and the journey. We have called this Our Grand Adventure. Our chance to show our children that dreams are possible, the world is at your feet, you are the only thing holding you back. Go for it. Why not. If it does not work out, if it is not what you thought it would be, come back. That simple. The adventure is worth it.

Susan and I are in our mid 40's so time is immenant. We have 5 children, from 5-13 three girls and two boys. I know they will be excited and scared, we all will be. But what a great gift to give them. The world. One day at a time. We will live each day and enjoy living.

We are blessed that Susan is a teacher, and she can handle the teaching while we are gone. That is not the biggest hurdle. The biggest seems to be how to liquidate.

As an entrepenure, I have to sell my business that i built. I say so what, I can always start another one if I want to. I signed a deal yesterday with a business broker to list it for sale. When it sales, we begin our process of boat shopping learning to sale, and the liquidation process for Nov. 2009.

Stay tuned. It will be a blast.
